The five pearls:
Monterosso al Mare, located in the centre of a natural gulf, is the largest village of the Cinque Terre, famous for its beaches and has been an inspiration for artists and poets, It is here where the Nobel Prize winner for literature Eugenio Montale lived. Monterosso al Mare is divided into two parts by a tunnel of about 10 meters: Borgo Nuovo and Borgo Vecchio. The coloured tower-houses are typical.
Vernazza, is a medieval village which in the past was the landing and departure point for the ships that had to be obstructed. Vernazza is considered one of the hundred most beautiful villages in Italy. In addition to its typical port, we may also note the church of St. Margaret of Antioch, the remains of the 11th century watchtower, the Doria Castle, the Tower of the Convent of the Reformed Fathers of St. Francis and the Belforte.
Corniglia, is an ancient Roman village that stands on an imposing cliff among the villages of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is the only one almost completely inaccessible from the sea. It is made up of narrow alleys and streets carved into the rock, reachable via the Lardarina, a brick flight of steps consisting of 33 flights and 377 steps. In Corniglia, the St. Peter parish church and the eighteenth-century square of largo Taragio with the Oratory of St. Catherine deserve a visit. The village is also characterized by its beautiful pebble beach known as the Spiaggione.
Manarola is a village that expands around the underground flow of the Groppo stream, from which a series of stone-paved alleys lead to the houses and gardens lying on the sides of the promontory. A peculiarity amongst its houses is a white concrete pyramid which serves as a bearing point for sailors.
To visit: the bell tower and the Gothic style church of San Lorenzo, the path carved into the rock of the Via dell’Amore (which starts from Riomaggiore) and the panoramic square located at the end of Via Belvedere with a real balcony overlooking the sea.
Riomaggiore is a village nestled between two steep hills. A distinguishing feature of its houses is that they all have a double entrance: one towards the alley and the other at the back, which from 1500 allowed the inhabitants to escape in the event of Saracen raids. The aforementioned Via dell’Amore starts from the Riomaggiore, a road carved into the rock that reaches Manarola. Also worth visiting are the Castle on the Cerricò hill and the Church of San Giovanni Battista
