Viareggio is worth visiting not just for its beaches:
History traces the founding of the city of Viareggio back to 1172 when it was built as a defensive stronghold against the Pisans.
In the nineteenth century the city began to be known for its sea and beauty. In 1822 Princess Paolina Bonaparte Borghese, sister of Napoleon, had a villa built there with a sea view where she spent the last years of her life.
In 1828 the first two bathing establishments were inaugurated, strictly divided as required by the morality of the time: Nereo for men and Dori for women.
The current architecture originates from the buildings built between Eclecticism and Liberty periods. Unfortunately many were destroyed during the bombings of the Second World War.
Amongst the beautiful places to visit are the Matilde Tower, Piazza Mazzini, the Church of Sant’Andrea, the Church of San Paolino, the Statue of Burlamacco, the Burlamacca Canal, the Politeama Theatre and the Palazzo delle Muse which contains a rich art collection and finally the Margherita Walk.
In the surroundings of Viareggio, Pisa and Lucca deserve a visit, as well as the Apuan Alps and Lake Massaciuccoli and all the other towns of Versilia: Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi, Seravezza and Stazzema, Camaiore, Massarosa.
